Volunteer

What’s it like to be a volunteer here?

First, you do not have to be a veteran to volunteer. We define our Veteran community as Veterans, family, caregivers, and volunteers – folks who just want to help. We have a very small staff, which ensures the vast majority of grants and donations go directly into the farm and events. If you would like to support our area veterans, you are very welcome, and very needed at the VHF.

There is no required commitment of time, or duties. Come and go as you please, and participate in what you would like to help with.

Vegetable Garden Volunteers

The soil needs worked, the weeds need picked, the starts need planted, the irrigation pumps need run, the greenhouse needs tended, the grass needs cut, the produce needs picked, and the bees need kept. Volunteers will learn about the various aspects of organic farming. No prior farming experience necessary. If you are interested in being part of this group please email- veteranshealingfarm@gmail.com

Flower Squad Volunteers

We also grow flowers which are then made into bouquets and distributed at the VA. Sam Raph oversees our flower program at VHF. She will work with her squad to plant, harvest and maintain our beautiful flower gardens. She also runs multiple workshops throughout the summer teaching flower design at no charge to our members. No prior experience necessary. If you are interested in being part of this group please email- veteranshealingfarm@gmail.com

Medicinal Herb Squad Volunteers

The Medicinal Herb Squad is led by our Plant Medicine Director, Rebecca Vann. Volunteers here will learn to grow the most popular and locally appropriate medicinal herbs, e.g., Echinacea, valerian, skullcap, lemon balm, ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh, chamomile, and more. The Squad then harvests the herbs and helps make them into tinctures, teas, balms, and salves used by our veterans – and volunteers! Rebecca also teaches workshops throughout the summer, at no charge to our members. No prior medicinal herb experience necessary. If you are interested in being part of this group email- info@aurumapotheca.com

Bee Squad Volunteers

The volunteer beekeepers raise and care for our honeybees. They construct and clean hives, induct wild swarms, splitting colonies, collect honey, and ensure the overall health of the hive. No prior bee experience necessary. Please contact veteranshealingfarm@gmail.com and we will get you in touch with the our head beekeeper.

Tomato Squad Volunteers

This is our newest addition to our volunteer roster. Working with Craig LeHoullier, PhD, aka North Carolina Tomato Man, volunteers will have the opportunity to grow and learn about a variety of heirloom tomatoes. No experience necessary! If interested, please contact veteranshealingfarm@gmail.com

Committee Volunteers

There is always plenty of work that doesn’t involve physical labor. We need volunteers to help with the back-end operations of the farm. This is accomplished through our volunteer committees for marketing, social media, events, membership, website development, fundraising, and community outreach. If you have any of these skills, new members are welcome and needed.

Now that you understand how volunteering works at the VHF, make sure you find the opportunity that suits you best. Let’s have fun!
